KEIKO IKEDA - JAPAN
The only Japanese female gymnast to have won a World Championships gold medal, Ikeda competed internationally for 12 years. At the first World Championships, held In Rome in 1954, she placed first on the balance beam. At the 1958 World Championships in Moscow, Ikeda won bronze medals on the balance beam and floor exercise. At the 1962 World Championships in Prague, Ikeda won two more bronze medals. At the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo, she won a bronze medal as a member of the third-place team. At the 1966 World Championships in Dortmund, Ikeda earned three medals - bronze in the all-around and team competitions, and silver on the balance beam. She has been a professor at Japan’s Sports Science University since 1956, and is a director of the Japanese Gymnastics Association.
