At the 1991 World Championships in Indianapolis, Bontas reached the pinnacle of the sport. She captured the gold medal in the floor exercise, tying with Hall of Famer Oksana Chusovitina, and took home two bronze medals in the All-Around and team events.

At the 1989 World Championships in Stuttgart...in a performance that solidified her status as a global star, Bontas earned a silver medal with the Romanian team and individual bronze medals on floor and vault. Most notably, she achieved a Perfect 10.0 on the floor exercise during the All-Around competition, a feat that remains a highlight of Romanian gymnastics history.

Born in 1973 in Bacău, Romania, Cristina Bontaș emerged as one of the most powerful and resilient gymnasts of the post-Nadia Comăneci era. Training at prestigious CSM Onești and later at the elite training center in Deva, under legendary coach Octavian Bellu, she quickly became known for her explosive tumbling and a signature "full-in" double layout on the floor exercise—an extremely difficult tumbling skill that set her apart from her more balletic teammates.

Bontaș made her international mark in 1987, but it was the 1989 World Championships in Stuttgart where she truly arrived. In a performance that solidified her status as a global star, she earned a silver medal with the Romanian team and individual bronze medals on floor and vault. Most notably, she achieved a Perfect 10.0 on the floor exercise during the All-Around competition, a feat that remains a highlight of Romanian gymnastics history.

At the 1991 World Championships in Indianapolis, Bontaș reached the pinnacle of the sport. She captured the gold medal in the floor exercise, tying with Hall of Famer Oksana Chusovitina, and took home two bronze medals in the All-Around and team events.

Her career culminated at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. Despite intense competition from the Unified Team and the United States, Bontaș led the Romanian squad to a silver medal. Individually, she claimed the bronze medal on the floor exercise, finishing her competitive career as a 2-time Olympic medalist, 6-time World medalist, and 3-time European Championship medalist.

Following her retirement in 1993, Cristina transitioned seamlessly into coaching. After short stints in Italy and Wales, she moved to Canada in 1996. Alongside her husband, Gabi Tăntaru, she founded World Class Gymnastics in Hamilton, Ontario.

She is recognized not just for her past medals, but for her role in mentoring the next generation of athletes. Her transition from an elite gymnast in Romania to a successful business owner and coach in Canada serves as a testament to her enduring work ethic and passion for the sport. And today, she joins the IGHOF in the Class of 2026.
